DEPARTMENTS

Our Administrator has the responsibility for the overall day-to-day operations of the Home.  Under his direction the various department heads care for the varied and special needs of each resident.  We are proud of a dedicated staff, with a low turnover rate, that share our mission of ministry to the older members of our community.

Nursing Department
Our nursing staff is responsive to the medical and special needs of our residents.  A call system makes assistance available at all times, a medication system ensures that all required medications are given correctly and on time, and assistance is provided, when required, with bathing, eating, and dressing.  Bed linens are changed weekly, or sooner if needed. Trained nurses' aides are on duty 24 hours a day and a registered nurse is available during the day and on call all other times.

Residents may continue to see their own doctor, or may use the doctor who comes to the Home on a regular basis.  A podiatrist and psychiatrist also make routine visits, Our staff coordinates calls with local visiting nurses and various therapists to provide well-rounded care.

Dietary Department
This department is dedicated to serving healthy, family-style meals each day.  Daily meals are based on the national food guide pyramid.  Three meals and an evening snack are served each day, with the main meal served at noon.  Cold beverages are available during the day, and a vending machine provides extra treats when desired.

The staff is responsive to special dietary needs as well as personal preferences of the residents They work closely with the Nursing Department to assure each resident's diet is correct.

Periodic group meetings are conducted by the head of this department to obtain suggestions from residents and comments so that menus will be enjoyed. Family and friends are encouraged to have meals at the Home for a small donation.

Activities Department
Our Activities Director provides meaningful and diversified activities to make life at Highway Home pleasant.  Since we are a Christ-honoring home, regular activities include morning devotions, a Bible study, and Saturday "Sunday School." Many residents make arrangements to attend a local church on Sundays.

Various events on the calendar during the month may include entertainment by school-aged children, a "foster grandparent" program, twice-a-month visits by trained therapy dogs, a chair exercise program, monthly birthday and theme parties, guest musicians and sing-a-longs, storytelling, group games, such as bingo, word games, trivia games, family fued, outburst, reminisce, and making treats.  The County Bookmobile comes twice a month.  Outings provide a chance to shop, luncheons at local churches, visit special area events, or join a group for an afternoon drive.

There are two large porches to enjoy on nice days, or the air-conditioned living/dining area on hot and humid days, We encourage residents to take part in all the activities, but the final decision is theirs--participation is voluntary.

Housekeeping Department
Although each resident is responsible for his/her own room, each room is regularly vacuumed and dusted by the housekeeper. This full-time Staff member maintains all common areas in the Home, other than the kitchen, and responds to special requests of the nursing staff, administrator, and resident.

Our goal is to provide a Christian, home-like atmosphere for our residents that will encourage friendships and sharing of memories and dreams.  Visitors are welcome any day between 9:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.  Many residents enjoy spending holidays with family; some have lunch "out" with friends or relatives.  We want everyone living at Highway Home to feel that this is their Home and that they are loved!
